Common questions

Where are my novels stored?

In the location you choose when you save or create them. Each novel is a .sonetia package you can move, copy, back up or open with a double-click. Settings ▸ Library lets you choose an optional default save folder; existing files keep their own locations.

How do I back up my writing?

Use Time Machine or keep a separate copy of your Sonetia files on a backup drive. Make sure cloud-stored files are downloaded before copying them. iCloud Drive and Dropbox can keep files in sync, but syncing can also carry deletions and unwanted changes to your other devices, so keep an independent backup.

Sonetia also keeps automatic manuscript snapshots inside each novel, available from the History panel. Because those snapshots live inside the same file, they do not replace a separate backup if the file is lost or damaged.

Can I open a novel on another Mac?

Yes. Copy the .sonetia file across and open it. Everything travels with it: the manuscript, artwork, characters, notes and snapshots.

How do I move or back up a whole project?

Copy the entire project folder, including its documents and hidden .sonetia-project folder, which stores its identity and artwork. Copying a single novel carries that novel’s contents, but does not include the other documents or the project’s own information. Wait for saving and any cloud syncing to finish before copying.

Can I read and annotate PDFs?

Yes. Import a PDF to keep a copy of its original pages in Sonetia and add highlights and comments. Export an annotated PDF to share those notes with a compatible PDF reader. Importing does not change the original file. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked before importing, and exporting annotations requires a PDF that permits them.

Does Sonetia work with Word?

Yes. Import a Word file, including an editor’s tracked changes, and accept or reject each change. Export .docx files for Word, Pages or Google Docs. PDF, EPUB, Markdown and plain text export are also available.

Can I bring my book from Scrivener?

Yes. Import Scrivener, Word, Markdown and PDF files from the Documents tab. Your original files are not changed.

Is there a subscription?

No. Sonetia is a one-time purchase on the Mac App Store.

Does Sonetia use AI to write for me?

No. Sonetia never generates prose, and never sends your writing to an AI service.

Do you sync between devices?

You can save your files in iCloud Drive or another synced folder. Your file provider handles syncing through your own account. Let a file finish syncing before opening it on another device, and avoid editing the same file on two devices at once. Sonetia does not operate a separate cloud account or manuscript server.

Reporting a problem

When reporting a problem, include:

  • What you were doing just before it happened.
  • Your macOS version (Apple menu ▸ About This Mac) and the Sonetia version (Sonetia ▸ About Sonetia).
  • A screenshot showing the problem, if possible.
  • Whether it happens every time, or only sometimes.

Please don't send your manuscript unless I ask for it. Most problems can be solved without it.

Requests and ideas

I read every one. Email the support address with what you’d like to do, and an example if you have one.
